Ok. I know link sections are usually stupid and this one is probably no exception, but it's a tradition that forms the very core of the
web, so here they are.
General
Geek Stuff
- Slashdot-Like the tag line says "News for Nerds, stuff that matters" if you're a geek you need to visit the site daily
- The Jargon File -The place on the net to learn about hacker culture, the history of computing and
obscure terms. I recommend you read the whole thing.
- Anandtech- the prime source for hardware info.
- The Art of Unix Programming- a great book, especially the chapters on programming philosophy.
- The Free Software Foundation-Home of the free software movement.
- Digg- like a totally user-driven slashdot.
Software
- GAIM -an open source IM client that I really dig.
- Firefox -for anyone who hasn't woken up and realized IE is worse than useless.
- Thunderbird for anyone who hasn't realized the same thing about Outlook. (also if you don't use IMAP you should).
- FileZilla- a well done GPLed FTP client.
- Crimson Editor Fed up with note pad? I was, here's the solution I found.
- Eclipse - a java IDE. If you have the misfortune to program in Java, this makes life easier.
- Putty- an open source SSH Client.
- CDex-open source CD ripping/encoding program which handles every audio format know to man(windows only).
- SpeedFan- a free as in beer program to monitor system tempature and control fan speed from Windows
- Winamp- The only audio player I've ever used(largely due to the whipping of the llama's ass).
Blogs( with a geekish bent)
- Joel on Software This has taught me ALOT about the business of designing software in the real world. Every essay should be read.
- Dive Into Mark Random blog by a guy who's now an accessibility engineer at IBM. Mostly python stuff, but interesting stuff happens along the way.
- 90% Crud Made famous for trying to sell an iTunes song on ebay. A lot of mac stuff but worth it for the sidebar links.
- Boing Boing Founded by Cory Doctorow (and others) like the tag line says "a directory of wonderful things" some but not all tech stuff, likely to interest any geek.
- Leland in Qatar - The blog of my geek friend who's spending a year in the middle east, at the CMU branch campus in qatar.
Pitt Stuff
- The Pitt News Pitt's independent student news paper, sometimes some really insightful stuff, other times really stupid. Both in ways only college students can appreciate.
- Quotes from Doc Though I guess you can only appreciate them if you've had him.
- Linux and Resnet -a guide from a friend of mine on how to connect to the Pitt Resnet network using linux and 802.1x which is not officially supported by Pitt/ResNet/etc.
- DMCalc The Discrete Math project I maintain.
- University Honors College As wonderful as UHC is, the website needs work (no, I am NOT the perfect person to do it). In any case if you not familiar with UHC, here's a good place to start.
Gaming
Humor
Science Fiction
- Trekweb-my favorite star trek site.
- The Force.net The best starwars site on the net.
- Dan Simmons home page The website of one of my favorite modern authors
- Psiphi.org-home of the Trek book database.
- Hatrack River- The Offical website of Orson Scott Card.
- Cory Doctorow-An SF writer known for his work with the eff and CC, most of his work is available for download. I highly recommend Eastern Standard Tribe.
