So it’s been quite a while since a post………….
reasons for this:
1) finals week. The bane of getting anything useful done. I managed to survive with only one potential fuck-up, not bad considering how ill prepared I was.
2) the outage of crazyivan.org, which if you’re here either isn’t affecting you or has been resolved. I feel really bad about this, especially since I just plucked down a bunch of money for a new, better hosting contact. All the evidence points to the outage not being the fault of the host, but some bizzare issues with the network backbone running into the server my site is hosted on, they’re looking into it for me. Between eliminating more likely causes (DNS failure, isolated local network problems, server failure) and talking to tech support, that’s eaten a bunch of time that could have been spent writing content. At this point, I’m resigned to send content into the void in the hopes that someone, some day will see it.
3) Moving home. Wow I have a lot of shit. shit which took 3 days to pack up and move home.
It’s interesting being back and it’ll be even more interesting to see if I make it through the next 4 months sanely. I love my family, but I’ve come to believe that I’m just not good at living with people. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but at the moment the prospect is rather daunting.
The upshot of this is that if you’re in the Bubble (our less than affectionate name for m “hometown.”) and you want to (or could at least bear to) hang out, contact me by any number of means (including, by not limited to, leaving a comment).
Ok so here’s a quick list of what I want to do this summer
1) Write. Ideally I want to do like 5 posts here a week, plus an essay every week or so. Alot will depend on if I get a job, and to a lesser extent how much time I spend totally unplugged, but that’s the goal.
2) I want to rekindle my love of reading. While I still plan to read my usual hardcore dose of SF, I want to branch out to some nonfiction stuff I’m interested in (IP, social economics, political leftism)
3) Code. I need to write a lot of code this summer. I need to debug a lot of code. I need to read code. and I need to tear code to bits and salvage the tiny useful parts. whether or not I have a job, I need to get going on a number of personal projects and maybe even contribute to some F/OSS stuff. It also wouldn’t hurt to learn a few new languages or learn how to use the ones I know better.
4) Work. At this point, I may or may not have a job, I’m getting some mixed information about it. I find having a job useful because a)you can learn from other people and b) it gets you a real incentive to do something, instead of just your own, easily distracted, motivation
5) Game. I gamed exactly once pre-finals in 05-2. I need to make up for lost time.
Current Plan: finish Call of Duty, finish Doom III,play SWG again (which I’ve been paying for, but not playing for months), get KOTOR II, and try the free version of anarchy online. I might pick up the matrix online to try it out, but I can’t see myself paying the month fees. Ditto world of warcraft.
6) (Re)Connect. I’ve neglected ALOT of people over the last two years. Some for good reasons. some for bad reasons. and some for reasons which make me a total asshole. I’d like to fix that over the next 4 months. If you’re one of those people and you’re reading this, please help me do that with you.
7) Watch. I have Tivo again! I plan to watch a lot of tv, hopefully I can find a series or two in daily syndication to watch (last year, it was The Practice, and to a lesser extent ER). For now, I’ve got a month’s worth of daily shows to watch. Also I’m hoping to go through 4 seasons or so of various series on DVD.
So that’s the plan, here’s hoping it works……………….
